Cottage Safety – Be Aware of These Risks During the Summer Season

As Canadians head to cabins, cottages, and vacation rentals this summer, it’s important to look out for hidden hazards before settling in.

One of the biggest risks is carbon monoxide, an invisible, odorless, and tasteless gas that can become dangerous inside homes, cottages, and rental properties. Because it cannot be detected by sight or smell, a working carbon monoxide alarm is the only reliable way to know if the gas is present.

Renovation expert Scott McGillivray says many people focus on amenities and activities when arriving at a vacation property, but safety should come first.

Whether staying at a family cottage or a rental property, experts recommend taking a few minutes to:

  • Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
  • Open windows to let fresh air circulate.
  • Look for trip hazards and other safety concerns.
  • Identify exits and emergency information.

Battery-operated carbon monoxide alarms can also be brought while traveling for additional peace of mind.

Before unpacking and enjoying your vacation, completing a quick safety check can help protect your family and ensure a relaxing stay all summer long.
